CRCA Open House Celebration

Celebrating the Completion of our Capital Project!

Children’s Rehabilitation Centre – Algoma celebrated the completion of its Capital Project on April 17, 2009.  A 5190 sq. ft. addition was added to the existing building at 74 Johnson Ave. and 2455 sq. ft. of existing space was renovated to take back much needed treatment space for clients and families.  This project was identified as a goal as far back as 1996 when the Centre purchased the former James Lyon School.  The project price tag was $1.3M with $215,000 raised by the Children’s Rehabilitation Centre – Algoma Foundation and $840,000 provided by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services.  Major donors for the Capital Campaign include:

§         The Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie;

§         Algoma Central Corporation;

§         The Great-West Life Assurance Company, and

§         Manulife Financial.

What does the completion of this project mean to our community?

  • We now have adequate space to meet the needs of the 660 clients and families we serve in Sault Ste. Marie and the 270 that reside in the other communities of the District of Algoma;
  • We have the physical space we need to develop a locally based Assistive Communication Clinic, as currently, the closest clinics are in Sudbury and Thunder Bay;
  • We now have a meeting room where staff and families can meet to discuss and plan their child’s services through our Family Service Plan process;
  • We have a large conference room, equipped with videoconferencing technology, to allow us to provide telehealth clinics, as well as training and education opportunities for our staff, families and community partners;
  • We have a dedicated and secure health records office which ensures the privacy and protection of personal health information;
  • We have a conducive work environment for staff which protects client confidentiality.

These changes have created a physical environment that will truly allow us to work towards our vision of “reaching potential together.”

Children’s Rehab would also like to recognize and thank Mr. Bruce Caughill architect-engineer, who designed our plans and oversaw the project and Jobst Construction for their fine work.  Both went the extra mile to create this warm and welcoming environment.  Community First Credit Union has also been a valuable partner, providing us with financing while we were in the process of raising funds.
